A dark and twisting read from the author of THE ECHO MAN.
This book is gripping from the start to the very end – perhaps being hooked was made easier by the knowledge that a Sam Holland / Louisa Scarr book is always going to be a five star read! It was every part as gruesome, addictive, terrifying and twisting that we expect.
The atmosphere surrounding Hollowpines, a fictional Psychiatric hospital set in Basingstoke, was brilliant. It was dark & creepy, and at times reflective of real life institutes. Equally, the atmosphere at the ‘nick’ – police HQ which provided the second main setting of this book was just as good. The banter, the animosity and the personal inter-weaving with the professional was great.
There was just the right amount of re-direction, mystery and unreliable narration (but who!) to keep the story-line fresh and fast-paced as everything progressed.
A little unique in a Thriller – you don’t always get a romance underlying the main story or if you do, the descriptions are mainly glossed over in favour of getting back to the dark and gritty stuff. However Sam Holland introduces a low level of romance that I’ve not seen in her books before and it worked extremely well. We can but hope that one day she does a genre switch but can she leave the killing behind? Who knows!
