Fall in love with beloved bestselling author Santa Montefiore’s epic tale of romance, secrets, family and friendship with this, the first novel in the beloved Deverill Chronicles.

Santa Montefiore’s storytelling feels utterly transporting, and Songs of Love and War is a perfect example of that magic – returning to her books after a long gap, I was reminded of the captivating nature of her writing style, characters and settings.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of wartime, this novel is rich with atmosphere, emotion, and a deep sense of place. Santa weaves together love, loss, and resilience in both an intimate and expansive way – you cannot help but be immersed in living alongside the characters as their lives are shaped by forces far beyond their control.

What stood out most to me was how beautifully the story captures the endurance of love in all its forms – romantic, familial, and those connections that sustain us in the hardest times, often not through our blood relatives. There’s a poignancy here that lingers long after the final page, balanced by moments of hope and tenderness.

If you enjoy historical fiction with heart, depth, and a touch of escapism, this is one to sink into. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest times, love and courage can still find a way to shine through.
