Dare I say it… I’m going to say it.. I LOVE the Robert Hunter series, but I loved this even more. Chris Carter’s first standalone novel did not disappoint and the deviation into a genre that almost doesn’t fit a simple description was surprisingly amazing. Not that it wouldn’t be, plenty of us know and love Chris’s writing, but it’s always daunting (for us and them) when they branch out a little.
This, I would say, is comparable in genre style to All The Colours of the Dark by Chris Whittaker, Our Last Wild Days by Anna Bailey and Harlan Coben in the earlier days. But at the same time it’s something that is all Chris and unique in its own way.
You will think you know where this book is going, and you’ll be wrong. There was even one or two pages where I thought this might dive down the road of a Cowboy Romance (joking, slightly) but the twists and turns were immense and kept me double guessing all the way through. Right up until that very last chapter, you will constantly be doubting yourself whilst simultaneously marvelling at Chris Carter’s ability to just deliver an incredible book.
Gone are the bloody, gruesome scenes. Something softer, reserved and even romantic, is in their place. But rest assured, the twists, turns and suspense, are still firmly there. Is it ‘tame’ for Chris Carter? Perhaps. Does that make it any less epic and utterly gripping? Absolutely not.

About The Author
Born in Brazil of Italian origin, Chris Carter studied psychology and criminal behaviour at the University of Michigan. As a member of the Michigan State District Attorney’s Criminal Psychology team, he interviewed and studied many criminals, including serial and multiple homicide offenders with life imprisonment convictions. He now lives in London.
