A remote island off Scotland’s coast, a family where everyone has secrets and one dead body.
The Inheritance is a psychological thriller which follows the ultra‑wealthy Agarwal family as they reunite to celebrate a 40th anniversary and discover who will inherit the family’s empire. But beneath the surface the family is fractured by ambition, secrets and emotional wounds.
Set on a remote private island, surrounded by stormy seas, the setting adds to the feeling of unease and the creeping dread that something bad is about to happen. The novel begins with a hint of the violence to come and jumps from past to present throughout, carefully revealing past events. The alternating viewpoints contribute to the character development and enable the tension to escalate leading to a shocking and satisfying conclusion.
The characters are messy individuals shaped by history, tradition and a whole lot of trauma. This is a family where success is expected, emotions should always be concealed, and image is everything. But beneath the surface, there are simmering rivalries, loyalty is tested and past choices begin to haunt them. The addition of the approaching inheritance creates a competitive atmosphere where each sibling is fighting for recognition. Their interactions are the heart of the novel’s tension.
What does it cost to keep up appearances? What happens when the truth won’t stay buried?
Don’t expect intense action from the start… it’s a slow-burn but one worth sticking with!
With thanks to Mellissa for this fabulous review!
