Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan returns in a case that will test her to her limit.
With thanks to our newest reviewer, Leticia, for this fabulous write up!
Kathy Reichs returns to the Temperance Brennan series, with the forensic crime thriller Evil Bones. For fans of this series there’s a familiarity with the Charlotte, North Carolina “south of the border” setting and returning familial and partner characters.
The short chapter and story progression makes this a pacy read, with just “one more chapter” happening often. The first-person narration keeps momentum with the progress between laboratory, crime scenes and personal insights, whether that’s truly accurate to the professional life of a forensic anthropologist it feels excused to keep the story moving promptly. The character development of Temperance Brennan is a long-standing arc throughout this series, but Kathy writes in a way that allows a new reader to be supported in each book and not need prior knowledge with each story taking a case focus. Rest assured if you do enjoy this read, you might find yourself devouring a series already established with lots to offer.
A trigger warning, the plot does feature animal mutilation within the opening story arc. This didn’t feel gratuitous but supportive of the storyline, and a challenging topic is not uncommon with Kathy’s books, the perspective of Tempe as a forensic anthropologist offers some distance as a reader with an analytical insight but the emotional impacts are written alongside with character responses.
An acknowledgement too of the TV series Bones, Kathy Reichs served as a producer but the only similarities between the books and show are the Temperance Brennan name and job title. If you’re of the ilk of “read the book first”, this series could be the exception; for anyone that has interest in forensics and police procedural you can revel in both independently, with the books offering a more scientific and grounded quality.

About the Book
Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan returns in a case that will test her to her limit.
OF ALL THE CREATURES IN THE WORLD, ONLY HUMANS HAVE THE CAPACITY FOR EVIL…
Small animals have been turning up throughout Charlotte, North Carolina, mutilated and displayed in the same bizarre manner. Now it seems the perp is upping the ante. When Temperance Brennan visits the latest crime scene, she finds that the victim is a dog. Somebody’s pet.
Vowing to find whoever is responsible, Tempe is disturbed to learn from a forensic psychologist that the escalating pattern of aggression suggests even more macabre discoveries to come. And then it happens. A woman is found disfigured and posed in a manner that mimics the earlier killings. As Tempe follows the horrifying clues to a shocking conclusion, she finds herself forced to confront an increasingly terrifying question.
What is pure evil?
