The rise of the 1990s witch
In the 1990s, witchcraft experienced a cultural and spiritual renaissance, stepping boldly into the mainstream through a wave of popular media and a growing body of published works that presented witches as powerful, complex, and relatable. TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch brought magickal women into living rooms across the world, while films like The Craft, Practical Magic, and Hocus Pocus sparked imaginations and ignited an appetite for real-life spellcraft.
This was also the era when real witches began stepping into the public eye. I was appearing regularly across media in Australia, the UK, and the USA, becoming one of the most recognizable public faces of modern witchcraft. My first books, published post-1998, became bestsellers – offering grounded, experiential teachings from my own practice, and making the craft accessible to a whole new generation of seekers.
The Laws of Witchcraft
While all laws are made to be broken – and many are subjective depending on the situation – most witches still choose to live by these ones.
Do what you will as long as you harm none.
The first law is straightforward: do not use your craft to harm others. This principle underscores the ethical responsibility inherent in practicing witchcraft. Do what you will but do not interfere with another’s free will.
The second law emphasizes the importance of consent. In fact, it could be renamed in these modern times: consent is crucial. Never perform magick on another person without their explicit permission, even for well-meaning intentions like healing spells. If obtaining consent is impossible, be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions, whether positive or negative.
